Here are details about some of the previous fares changes
made by Reading Buses. Single Bus Fares From June 2001 A zonal fare system was introduced in June 2001. Before that the fares system involved a large number of fare stages throughout the town, and passengers were charged depending on which stages they travelled between. In general a fare stage would be every 2 or 3 stops, and the fare to a certain location increased every 1, 2 or 3 fare stages further away. You can see an old Reading Mainline fare table here. The zonal system is as follows: The town is split up into zones, and the fare you pay is based on the number of zones that you travel through. The zone boundaries are as follows:
From 1st October 2002 until 4th January 2004 All town routes (numbered under 100): To help speed up boarding times and to increase safety, passengers must tender the exact fare for their journey (in any number of coins or notes) and place it in a secured hopper to the left of the drivers cab. Bank notes must be shown unfolded to the driver, folded once and placed in the hopper. The driver is unable to give change. Readifare was introduced during October 2002 on all Reading town services to speed up boarding times and to protect drivers from the risk of assault. Previously drivers would give change if you did not have the exact money, but would end up spending much longer loading at stops than they do now. (Readifare was later extended to rural routes 111, 112 and 113 from 4th July 2005). The town is split up into zones, and the fare you pay is based on the number of zones that you travel through. The zone boundaries are as follows:
