www.weavaway.co.uk. including Southern Railroad Company & Top Travel Weavaway Travel operate a modern and frequently changing fleet on school contracts and coach excursions from a base in Greenham near Newbury. Buses are branded Newbury & District in memory of the original Newbury & District Motor Services Ltd dating from 1932, and operate a number of West Berkshire tendered services in the Newbury area. Weavaway took over the coaching arm of Countywide Travel on 1st October 2007, and purchased Tappins Coaches from the Heyfordian Group on 30 September 2012. This coach was acquired in May 2001 and was Reading Transport 216 (reg. WOI 3005), and before that it was Ipswich Transport's 303 with registration G683 KNW. It was then sold by Weavaway to Keepings Coaches, Penrhiwceiber, Wales on 24th October 2001, less than six months after purchase. Optare MetroRider Mk 1, B10 MDC at St. Mary's Butts in Reading on 17th July 2001. This bus has been reregistered TJI 6308. Here is the same bus almost a year later on 13th July 2002 now bearing registration TJI 6308. The bus was sold to Burghfield Mini Coaches. Mercedes S377 PGB in Reading on 23rd August 2002, still in its former owner (Stagecoach) livery. S377 PBG again, just under a month later after repaint into fleet livery. It is seen here at Reading Station on Saturday 14th September 2002 operating the summer Ridgeway Explorer service X48. Since then it has been registered P504 LMO. S331 SET was one of four Scania / Irizar Centurys acquired with Steventon Transport in October 2005. Reregistered B10 MNX it is seen at Reading Station on 1st May 2006. Noge Catalan WT52 EGG at Oxford Railway Station on rail replacement services to Bicester on 2nd September 2003. Bova Futura, Y 8OVA at Leamington Spa Railway station on 19th January 2003 operating a rail replacement service. This is former Leyland Olympian EEH 910Y outside Newbury Bus Station on 20th July 2001. It is seen here before repaint into fleet livery. This bus was part exchanged for two tri-axle ex-Hong Kong MCW Metrobuses in November 2001. Former ECW bodied Leyland Olympian SJR 615Y in Newbury on 22nd July 2002. This bus was part exchanged for a tri-axle ex-Hong Kong Dennis Condor in August 2002. B10 MKC, painted in Noah Vale livery, is seen at Reading Station early on 9th March 2005 before taking up a schools contract out in the Caversham direction. Dennis Condor / Duple Metsec B10 MFC in Newbury on 7th April 2003. This bus was named Megadecker 5 before repaint into Yellow Noah Vale livery in 2005. A brief history of Newbury & District: Newbury & District were established in 1932 and taken over by the Red & White group in early 1944. In 1950 Red & White sold out to the British Transport Commission who reorganised their operations with other recently nationalised companies, and merged the Newbury operations with Thames Valley Traction. Thames Valley were merged with Aldershot & District to become Alder Valley from 1 January 1972. Upon privatisation of the National Bus Company in the 1980s, Alder Valley was purchased by the Berks & Bucks Bus Company, trading as The Bee Line. In 1991/2 their Reading and Newbury operations were sold to Reading Transport. Tappins became part of the Heyfordian group shortly before the death of Paul Tappin in 2007. VanHool T9 Alizée R184 VSJ on rail replacement duties at Leamington Spa station on 23rd February 2003. This is one of the first vehicles to carry a new restyled version of the fleet livery. Optare Spectra T124 AUA outside Fox's Diner at Berinsfield Interchange on 21st July 2008. The vehicle was acquired for a school service won by Heyfordian in the Wallingford area from 1st June 2008 but has has 'Operated by Tappins' lettering by the front door. Still in as-acquired condition the centre door conversion is clearly visible. T124 AUA seen at the same location two months later on 19th September 2008, now in full fleet livery after a repaint over the summer holiday. |
