August Roundup

30-08-04

With very little specific to report in Reading, there are one or two items to round up.

Titan 79 caught fire whilst on rail replacement work on 15th August, and whilst it is currently not fit for service, no decision has yet been announced about its future. Withdrawn 71 contains all of the spare parts required to fix 79, so from the outside the decision appears to be whether or not it is worth repairing 79. Once the new Scanias arrive it was intended to keep 77-9 on Goldline duties for the time being, with no decision having been made about their replacement (despite rumours of Spectras 701-3 or even new double deck coaches taking their places). So it remains to be seen what happens, and whether 79 has come to an early end. If previous trends continue however, there is surely a chance that we will see 79 in service once again.

Due in the next few weeks are the first two new Scania OmniDekkas that are on order for route 17. They will be in an unbranded lime green and grey livery, as opposed to lime green and purple which will bear branding for the 17. All 17 of the vehicles (13 purple, 4 grey) will launch on route 17 from 26th October. Notices are already being displayed onboard buses to advertise the fact that new buses are due to start from this date.

As usual this year special rock festival service 98 was in operation, with a special flag and timetable posted at stop SA outside the station. For the record the information given on the Reading Buses website (which was either very similar or identical to that shown on the stop at Reading Station) is quoted below:
